"La proximidad de los productos: los mercados de abastos de la Costa Daurada" (Local sourcing of produce: food markets on the Costa Daurada) is the title of a project by Francesc Fusté Forné, a researcher at the University of Girona's Laboratori Multidisciplinar de Recerca en Turisme who will be doing a research stay this February through the UOC's UNESCO Chair in Food, Culture and Development.

His project – supervised by F. Xavier Medina, a researcher with FoodLab, the UOC's interdisciplinary research group on diet, nutrition, society and health – sought to analyse local produce markets as destinations for food tourism. His study set out to analyse the origins of the food being sold in markets in the Costa Daurada, calculating their range, making classifications based on where they came from and establishing the distances between the points of production and the distribution. In Fusté's own words, "this project has implications for the management of relationships between production and distribution centres, making it possible to determine what potential is offered by different sites for the promotion of authentic food tourism".

This project was possible thanks to funding from the 2nd call for mobility grants for doctors from Campus de Excelencia Internacional, with support from both the Triptolemos Foundation and ”la Caixa” Banking Foundation.
