Títol: Creating an Online Dimension for University Rankings
Objectius: Digital education is being seen as a promising means of increasing learning opportunities at a more affordable cost for European and world-wide students. The reports from the High Level Group on the Modernisation of Higher Education highlight the importance of blended and, specifically, online education to respond to the demands of greater flexibility and access to higher education. However, as usual, quality of online education is still a concern. Despite the development of quality assurance tools, reputation of online education institutions is under suspicion, and this harms the expectations of the potential students, users of this teaching and learning mode. Currently, the most important tool for positioning universities in the global market is that of the ranking systems. Despite the critiques they receive, they will stay. However, rankings do not consider the peculiarity of online education institutions. Criteria and indicators used in the general rankings do not fit perfectly with the needs to have more transparent information about the opportunities and the quality students can expect from online institutions. The creation of European-led indicators for the measurement of quality in online education would promote the recognition of the online HE learning and teaching field. This would eventually create more opportunities for students to access high quality online HE institutions, while recognising a wider range of institutions (thanks to the "Guidelines to improve the performance of online institutions" part of this project) than the ones recognised as 'high quality ones' in the available HE rankings to date. Good and reputed online education institutions will provide more competition between universities and more options for the students.
