It will study improvements in the realm of logistics and transport in Europe
The European Commission has approved a project coordinated by the UOC aimed at improving the European transport and logistics sector. It consists of a consortium enabling students, researchers, members of faculty and administrative staff to spend time in other European centres in order to analyse the critical and specific aspects that need working on, including aspects relating to smart cities. Until 2018 the EU will fund, through the Erasmus+ Mobility programme, a total of 32 mobility actions by members associated with the participating institutions, in addition to the UOC itself: Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) and the Public University of Navarre (UPNA).
In the words of those responsible for the consortium SmartTransLog@EU, "Road freight transport is associated directly with costs such as congestion, contamination, safety and delays, among others". "If European logistics companies want to be competitive they must equip themselves with efficient decision-making methods to solve problems with solutions that are, among other things, environmentally friendly", they add. These methods are based on intelligent algorithms, such as simheuristics, that combine computing, optimization and simulation.
Among other issues, SmartTransLog@EU will offer high-quality international, interdisciplinary and comprehensive training to master's degree and doctoral students, who will engage in pre- and postdoc stays at foreign universities in the EU and will have the opportunity to carry out an interdisciplinary, internationally co-directed master's or doctoral thesis.
The UOC's participation is headed by the professors of the Faculty of Computer Science, Multimedia and Telecommunications and the Internet Computing & Systems Optimization (ICSO-DPCS) research group of the IN3.
The project, coordinated by the UOC, is one of the six in Spain approved by the EU, receiving the highest score among them from the assessors.

In addition to this consortium, the EU has approved 22 individual mobility actions as part of the Erasmus+ programme, aimed at students, administrative staff and faculty.
