One of the aims of all universities is to stimulate and facilitate the participation of researchers in R&I projects and, therefore, facilitate knowledge transfer between businesses and the academic world. This participation can come through what is called collaborative R&I or contracted R&I activity.

Collaborative R&I includes participation by different people/organisations in the same project, each of them with different levels or involvement and responsibility, but with a single aim and achieving a single common result. This activity can be supported by public policies and competitive grant application processes (this is the case, for example with the Ministry’s collaborative applied research sub-programme) or it can arise through private initiative.

Contracted R&I activity is where a business/institution contracts the university to carry out R&I, consultancy or services.  It is therefore another way in which universities collaborate with the business world.

Meanwhile, other types of collaborations are also carried out, such as stays at the UOC by staff from other institutions in order to do a PhD, for example, or carry out other teaching activities. In turn, staff from the university also go for stays at other institutions in order to collaborate on R&I activities and share teaching and management experiences at the different institutions.

Other types of collaboration that can occur are aimed at transferring the results of the R&I activity carried out at the  UOC. There  can be cases of licensing computer programs to third parties, adapting methodologies and procedures –largely in teaching– to other institutions, openly sharing the content and results of the range of education and ’R&I, etc. A clear example of this proposal to offer these results openly is the OpenApps project, in which a platform is being developed that will present and share different applications developed at the UOC.
