Títol: Sino-Spanish encounters in Taiwanese and European archives: 1839-1939
Objectius: Sino-Spanish encounters in Taiwanese and European archives: 1839-1939 Interactions between China and Spain from mid-19th century to mid-20th century remain underexamined. Previous scholarship on this topic has had a limited impact and has not engaged in international discussions due to several reasons: it generally concentrates on Spanish sources, it is usually published in Spanish language, and it tends to emphasize referential work that does not connect with global interactions between China and the West. This project aims at overcoming such limitations. It wants to prove that: (a) the empirical evidences that have traditionally been used to analyze the relations between China and the West are limited and, therefore, the resulting theoretical framework is biased, as it assumes a bilateral form that does not take into account the plurality that lies within the very same concept of “the West”; and (b) the interactions between Spain and China during the first half of the 20th century are significant as they can call into question and supplement previous scholarship on the interactions between China and the West.
